Lilburn is a city in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 17,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Lilburn was founded on December 15, 1828 by Colonel John Troup and his men as a station on the Savannah River. The town grew rapidly due to its location near Savannah and its natural resources: cotton, rice, and tobacco. Lilburn's strategic location gave it an important role in both the American Civil War (1861-1865) and Reconstruction (1867-1912). In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army attacked from within Lilburn while Union General Ulysses S. Grant was besieging Petersburg; the Confederate attack failed because of lack of food and ammunition for both sides (). After the war ended, Lilburn became one of Reconstruction's most successful cities. In 2002, Mayor Ronnie Johnson announced that he would not seek reelection in 2006 due to health concerns; he served out his term until 2009. In November 2009 Mayor Johnson announced his candidacy for mayor again but lost to Nathan Deal

Lilburn was founded in 1892 by John and Anna Lilburn. It became a small town with a population of about 100 people in the early 1900s. The Lilburn family operated a grocery store and bakery until 1938. In the 1940s, the Lilburns moved to nearby Decatur, Georgia, and opened a department store there. They sold their business to J.C. Penney in 1957.
