Lilburn is a town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Lilburn was George Washington Hardin in 1804. He named his land after General James Halleck, who had commanded American forces during the War of 1812. A post office called Hardinville was established in 1815, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1848. In 1830, John Chafe moved to Lilburn from Jackson County and erected a dam on the Chattahoochee River to create a reservoir for irrigation purposes. In 1834, he married Margaret Smith and founded the city of Chafe's Landing on the bank of the river opposite present-day Lilburn. The first schoolhouse built within present-day Lilburn limits was erected by Methodist Episcopal minister Wiley Pemberton near what is now Court House Road about 1840; it burned down in 1861 but has been rebuilt several times since then. The first store opened in 1865 by Wm Dillard at what is now Peachtree Street and Dry Creek Drive; it closed about 1970 due to financial difficulties. A post office called "Milton" was established at Milton Shoals east of present-day Milton on November 6, 1865; it failed to take effect because no one lived there long enough to receive mail. The first white child born within present-day Lilburn limits was born on November 5, 1898 – Alice Elizabeth Churchman – when her mother’s family added an addition to their home near Court House Road (now Peachtree Street). That house still stands today as part of Bruce’s Furniture Store complex which also includes an adjacent restaurant/bar/hall which once served as Chapel Hill Baptist Church until 1975 when that building became known as "Hollywood" movie theater annexe with its own entrance off International Boulevard . Churchman later became Mrs. William Rankin III who resided there until her death on October 25th 2014 at age 89 years old after a long illness
The early history of Lilburn, Georgia is unknown. However, it is possible that the town was founded by Native Americans. The first European to visit Lilburn was James Robertson in 1795. In 1802, a group of Scottish immigrants named themselves the Scotsboro party and traveled from Glasgow to explore new land in what is now Georgia. They discovered an area that would be perfect for settlement: a valley between two mountains. They named their new community after their home country, Scotland, and began building their homes and businesses there. The Scotsboro party was responsible for starting the development of Lilburn as a town.
