Lilburn is known for its agriculture and manufacturing industries as well as its significant African American population. Lilburn has a history dating back to 1802 when it was named "Lenox Hill" after General James Lenox who fought in the War of 1812. Lilburn is located in southwestern Fulton County on U.S. Route 1A (the main east-west road in Fulton County) about southeast of Atlanta and west of Decatur. The town began developing around 1802 when General James Lenox settled here with his family from England to help take care of his plantations following the war with Native Americans that ended with victory for America over France. Lenox's settlement became called "Lenox Hill." In 1835, John Sibley founded what would become known as Sibley & Son grocery store on Court Avenue which was then an important commercial center for farmers and merchants near where today's Interstate 285 crosses over from US 1A/SR 875 to SR 11/US 41 (then FM 516). In 1840, John Sibley Jr., son of John Sibley Sr., opened another store across US 1A from Sibley & Son on present day Jog Road just south of I-285 exit 9B (now Johnson Rd.). By 1850, there were nine stores in operation throughout southern Fulton County - three by John Sibley Jr., four by his father and five by other sons or nephews including Wm Henson (1830-1920), Jesse Henson (1835-1910), Augustus Purdy (1840-1920), Hiram Purdy (1845-1900) and Willis Meeks(1848-1921).
