The city was founded in 1802 by James Wilkinson and his brother-in-law George Washington Smith as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. Lawrenceville grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on two major trade routes: the Santee and Savannah Railway through nearby Georgia Tech University and the Alabama & Florida Railroad between Atlanta and Mobile. In 1857, Wilkinson sold his interest in Lawrenceville to developer Domingo de Ayala for $1 million. Ayala renamed it "Atlanta" after his home town of Madrid, Spain where he had been born in 1784. In 1886, Atlanta annexed Lawrenceville as part of its enlarged city boundaries. Lawrenceville experienced significant economic growth during World War II due to its strategic location near several important military installations such as Fort McNair in downtown Atlanta and Fort Sterling Park on Dekalb Avenue just east of Interstate 285 outside of downtown Lawrenceville proper. Additionally, the city became an important manufacturing center with production of tires, aircraft parts and munitions coming from local companies such as Alcan Aviation Company and Grumman Aircraft Corporation. After the war ended, Lawrenceville slowly lost some of its industrial importance but still maintains a strong population presence with many businesses continuing to locate in downtown or central areas within the city limits today. In recent years there has been an effort by Mayor John Pugh to revive downtown development along with expanding beyond simply retail into mixed use buildings which could include offices or even a new stadium for local football team?
