Lawrenceville is a small city in Fulton County, Georgia,United States. It was founded in 1868 and named for General James Lawrence. Lawrenceville is located on the Decatur-Marietta Railway. The population of Lawrenceville was 8,898 at the 2010 census. The town is home to the University of Georgia and Lawrenceville High School, one of only two high schools in Fulton County that are both public schools. The other school, Stone Mountain Academy, is private and has a student body that exceeds 1,000 students. In 1865, General James Lawrence moved his family from Tennessee to what is now Lawrenceville after purchasing 2 million acres (10 km2) of land in present day Fulton County for $5 per acre ($100). He began developing this land into a community with sawmills and other mills it would become known as "the Garden State". In 1868 he name the town after himself but because there were already towns named Decatur and Marietta in Georgia he changed it to "Lawrenceville" so that everyone could get used to it being called "The Garden State". In 1870 alone the town had 3 churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1868), Methodist Episcopal Church (1871), and Presbyterian church (1872). There were also several stores including Gadsden & Hawkins Hardware Store (opened by Nathan Hawkins in 1875), Fenton's Grocery store (owned by Elias Fenton from 1876-1905), Hartsgrove Furniture store(opened by Wm Hartsgrove in 1886), J.C.'s Barber Shop(opened by John Colson Jnr., uncle of Barack Obama) which continued until 1959, Purdy's Provision House(opened by Peter Purdy around 1893) which served as an immigration station between1890-1900 when all immigrants coming through Atlanta were processed here at this point before being sent southward along the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad to points such as Gulfport or Jacksonville
Lawrenceville was founded in 1795 by Captain James Lawrence, who named it for the large number of lawless frontier settlers that he encountered there. The town rapidly became a center for trade and commerce, and its population grew from about 100 residents in 1800 to more than 2,000 by 1810. It continued to grow until the Civil War, when it shrank significantly due to its proximity to Atlanta. By 1865, Lawrenceville had all but disappeared as a result of the war. However, it has since resurgence as an important community in southeastern Georgia.
