In 1828, General James Lawrence moved his family to this location and founded the town of Lawrenceville on what is now Court Street. The town rapidly grew into a major center of trade and commerce with its businesses growing exports such as cotton (from which the city derives its name), lumber (from which many homes were built), transportation (a railroad was constructed through town), and other industrial products. In 1871, when Atlanta annexed much of Fulton County, Lawrenceville became part of Atlanta proper. However, due to its proximity to Atlanta's most important commercial district, Lawrenceville continued to grow until it had a population over 100,000 by 1900. During World War II (1939-1945), Lawrenceville played an important role as an important production site for munitions manufacturers in central Georgia due to its strategic location at milepost 273 on Interstate 95 south between Augusta and Roswell
