Lawrenceville, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia. It is the seat of Lawrenceville School District. The population was 24,924 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1845 as a town within what is now Fulton County by James Covington and his family. In 1849, it became a voting precinct for the newly formed Athens-Clarke County. In 1858, it became an incorporated village. On February 14, 1865, Lawrenceville was chartered as a county seat with John Blythe as its first governor and courthouse being built on the present site of Gadsden Square Mall. The population grew rapidly due to cotton farming after the Civil War and saw rapid growth until along with other portions of Fulton County (including Jonesboro) during Reconstruction it slipped into poverty following that period's efforts to improve education opportunities for African Americans. The city exploded again in the early 21st century with new development around Gwinnett Parkway and Interstate 285; however much of this has been replaced or abandoned since then given Gwinnett's recent history of economic weakness overall and some of its own problems such as racism which continue today despite various initiatives to address them like Gwinnett Now!
