Lawrenceville was founded in 1802 by George Lawrence and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for General James Lawrence who commanded the Georgia militia during the war of 1812. The first settler in Lawrenceville was John Law, who arrived in 1800. In 1802, George Lawrence donated a lot to the town to become its central square. A courthouse and jail were built in 1805 and 1808, respectively. The town's first school opened in 1809. By 1830, the population of Lawrenceville had grown to over 100 people. In 1830, lawyer Ebenezer Horton purchased land adjacent to the town fromGeorge Lawrence for $10 per acre. Horton developed the area into what is now known as downtown Lawrenceville. In 1840, residents voted to incorporate as a city and name their new city after Ebenezer Horton. The city's first mayor was Nathaniel Crayton and its first vice-president was Elijah Dillard Jr..
