With rapid growth came growth in traffic and infrastructure; one result was that streets were renamed after major highways such as I-85 and State Route 436. In 1984, portions ofAtlanta were annexed into Lawrenceville through annexation referendum; this led to the current name given to it today: "Lawrenceville". Today's downtown retains much of its colonial architecture with Federalist/Republican style homes dating back to before World War II - including several original penthouses built for president Andrew Johnson. Several smaller businesses have also been established there over the years including Bluegrass Grill & Brewery (founded in 1987), Ponderosa BBQ & Grills (founded in 2000), and Juke Joints Unlimited (founded in 2003). Additionally, many stores have closed or moved away over time but their names still remain among history buffs throughout Southeast Georgia due to their role within Peach Street Marketplace Shopping Center Historic District preservation designation granted in 2015 There are also a few restaurants located along Peachtree Road near Stone Mountain Park (), which locals affectionately call "The KFC". It should be noted that while most people refer to downtown as "Lawrenceville", parts of it nearer Stone Mountain Park () are more commonly known simply as "Stone Mountain". This appellation may come from early residents who discovered rich coal seams around this locality when exploration began there about sixty years ago (). Coal mining continued until 1965 when all underground mines were abandoned save for two small operations left active plus some surface workings that contributed some 1 million tons annually Of course since then we've seen quite a bit of development around here especially east side Biltmore Avenue/Mountain View Drive etc... so it really depends where you're looking from if you want just 'downtown' or everything surrounding it
