Lawrenceville, Georgia is a town of about 30,000 people located in the northcentral part of the state of Georgia. It was founded by African Americans in 1881 as a small farming community. Lawrenceville, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 21,469 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The history of Lawrenceville goes back to 1814 when two men by the name of Lawson and Smith founded a small community on the east side of the Chattahoochee River in what is today Lawrenceville. It was known as "The Valley". In 1836, a post office called Greeneville was established in what is now Lawrenceville; it served until 1859. In 1881, when General William Troup moved his headquarters from Decatur to Atlanta, he appointed Arthur Ashe as commissioner for education in Cobb County and ordered him to found a school in Lawrenceville. Ashe completed the job and named the school after himself – "Lawrenceville Academy". In 1886–87, John A. Logan built an efficient cotton gin near present-day downtown Lawrenceville for processing cotton bales into yarns and fabric articles. This gin became one of America's first textile mills and remains active today as an industrial park IDEAL FOR BUSINESSES IN THE AREA! In 1907–08 Atlantans WIlliam Hargrave (1863-1948) and James Broughton (1864-1945) donated land adjacent to their home on Depot Street for incorporation into a town which would become known as Lawrenceville proper. The citizens approved this plan by referendum on May 5th 1908 with over 60% voting yes! On June 15th 1909 local officials bestowed upon Lawrencevilie its own unique legal form – municipal government under a Mayor/Council system! With this new governmental structure came increased responsibility for civic amenities such as public schools, fire protection services & more! On December 1st 1912 Mayor/Council met again to elect officers including First Vice President Augustus Cates (1865-1958), Treasurer Jno Pritchard (1868-1951), Superintendent Abram Woolridge (1871-1930) & selectmen Averill Caldwell (1873-1950). After careful consideration they voted 2:1 to ratify annexation by Marietta!!! Now that’s dedication!!! By 1920 there were over 100 people living within limits of present day downtown Lawrencevilie—-just think how many people we have now???!! And all because Atlantans WILLIAM HARGRAVE AND JAMES BROUGHTON STOOD UP TO HELP!!!!!
