Lawrenceville, Georgia is a town of about 50,000 people located in the Atlanta metropolitan area. It was founded in 1825 by John Lawrence and his family. The town was named for General James Lawrence, who had won a battle against the Creek Indians in 1814. The first gun shop in Lawrenceville was opened by George Witherspoon in 1826. Over time, other gun shops and manufacturers have opened up in Lawrenceville, including Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester) and Browning Arms Company (Browning). Lawrenceville is one of two cities in Fulton County (the other being Sandy Springs) that are both incorporated as townships and do not have any voting representation in the General Assembly. In addition to its township form of government, Lawrenceville also has a special school district form of government which includes several high schools and some elementary schools. The city was founded by white settlers in 1824 on land grant from King Philip II of Spain. It grew rapidly due to textile production beginning around 1830 and increased trade with the Atlantic Coast during the Civil War. The city's rich soil and warm climate attracted developers such as J.C. Penney and other industry heavyweights who built hundreds of homes between 1870-1920s for workers and their families, making Lawrenceville one of the most populous cities in Georgia at that time. In 1951, when Fulton County was created from parts of three previous counties, Lawrenceville became one of four townships within it - along with Duluth, Alpharetta, and Stockbridge - all organized into a new county court system under Chief Justice Homer Wigginton Jr.. The townships were abolished as part of an overall plan to reduce countywide spending by adding more self-governing jurisdictions within it; this would allow more money to be spent on public education while limiting township control over important aspects like zoning laws (though these restrictions were lifted after World War II). With only 1 percent residents living in each township (compared to 3 percent statewide), Lawrenceville enjoyed almost complete autonomy until 1971 when it joined neighboring Sandy Springs together as a single municipality under then-Mayor James Aiken Sr.. Under Mayor Harry Mitchell's administration from 1978 through 1984, efforts began to change what had become an essentially cookie cutter suburban lifestyle into something more Accessed/Creative/Urbanized; many streets were renamed after celebrities or local historical figures such as Drayton McLane or Don Youngblood while new parks were constructed including White Sands Park which now borders Johns Creek for park purposes only... additionally downtown buildings underwent renovation/updates including renovation/updates to law courts dating back to 1892... throughout this time period much work was done towards revitalizing downtown with art exhibits being staged throughout year long.... during Mitchell's tenure there was also establishment/promotion of various nightlife attractions such as "The Beaches" nightclub located onPeachtree Street near Piedmont Avenue which went out big nationally during early 1990s following success story campaign spearheaded by then mayor Julian Bond... current Mayor DavidLeeper plans on continuing those features but looking further ahead into developing larger economic areas near I-285 airport providing job opportunities for people living in towncenter areas such as Lawrencesburg etc......... Today despite several setbacks recent years have seen continued growth with many businesses opening up especially development along I-285 corridor... major projects currently underway include redevelopment/renovation(of historic courthouse) adjacent Piedmont Ave shopping center just eastside interchange off I-285 main street

They moved into what is now downtown Lawrenceville with their new freedom and started a new life. This happy story did not end however; many of these former slaves decided to start businesses within the city limits which helped makeLawrenceville one of the most successful cities in Georgia
