The town grew rapidly during Reconstruction following the Civil War as cotton production increased and black Americans moved to the area. By 1870, Lawrenceville had become an important commercial center with several stores and two banks. During World War II, Lawrenceville housed more than 5,000 military personnel from all over Georgia while they underwent training at Camp Roberts near Decatur; many of these personnel lived in tents on parkland across from downtown until they could be mustered into service. Afterward, residents worked to rebuild their homes which had been destroyed by war effort or damage caused by bombing raids such as those that struck Hiroshima or Tokyo during World War II. In 1925, Atlantia Railway Company donated land for an express railway line between Marietta and Athens; this line became known as the Atlantia Line Museum Railroad Heritage Trail.
