Lawrenceville, Georgia is a small town located in Cobb County, Georgia. It is the only municipality in Cobb County and it was chartered on February 14, 1837. The population of Lawrenceville was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Lawrenceville is home to the University of Georgia and to several other prominent institutions. The first permanent settler in what is now Lawrenceville was James Cushing, who arrived in 1785. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking FIGO Creek and named his land "Cushing's Bluff." The post office at Lawrenceville was established in 1836. In 1838, David Levy settled here with his family and platted out a town site that included present-day downtown streets and parts of present-day East High School. A store and jail were built here in 1840 by Levy's brother Jacob Levy; the latter structure still stands today (rebuilt as part of the University of Georgia graduate school project). In 1843, William Hogg moved from Decatur to become one of the first settlers in what would become Lawrenceville; he purchased two acres (0.8 km²) east of downtown for $25 per acre (1 hectare/2 square kilometers). From this spot he began construction on what would eventually become known as "The Hogtown". Hogg’s settlement consisted of fifty houses – twenty-six were built before he died in 1865 from an unknown illness at age eighty-four years old; four remain standing today within walking distance of each other on Oglethorpe Avenue between Second Street SW and Third Street SW. In 1845, Nathan Bedford Forrest became interested in developing this area and contacted several easterners about buying or leasing land for plantations near Dahlonega Creek; these men offered to help Forrest build roads, laid down watercourses, planted trees and constructed mills while local citizens collected taxes for him. By 1850 there were over one hundred families living here with seventy workers buildingroads, bridges & dams etc., providing essential services for their community including power generation & water supply for homes & businesses. "Lawrenceville grew quickly due to its strategic location midway between Savannah & Atlanta," according to historian John Morrissey Jr.. “It was easy access to railroads which made it possible for farmers throughout northeast Georgia to sell their produce directly into southern markets without leaving town….industrial growth followed soon after when factories began manufacturing goods destined for southern consumers…." By 1870 there were six full time factory employees working at various businesses associated with hog production….. By 1900 there were over 1200 residents employed by sixty industry proprietors." During World War II many people left Lawrencevilie because they had no choice but to leave because they could not support themselves during wartime shortages caused by rationing which cameurated after Pearl Harbor: "Many people simply could not afford either food or housing…… Lawrencesvillians faced some tough times but they never lost faith or hope." Many people returned after the war ended but most did so around 1970 when self-reliance returned following economic recession caused by oil embargo
