Lawrenceville is a small, unincorporated community in Cobb County, Georgia. It is located on the east side of Lawrenceville Road and near the intersection of US-31 and GA-26. The population was 714 at the 2000 census. The first settler in Lawrenceville was James Pritchard, who arrived in 1820 from England. He built a cabin on what is now State Route 31. A post office was established at Lawrenceville in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. On January 1, 1876, General Oglethorpe ordered all African Americans to leave the state of Georgia for fear they would become an impediment to white settlement. Many were taken to Alabama where they were forced into slavery. Some freedom seekers returned to Georgia but many others decided to stay put because of fears that they would be deported again if they left the country again. On December 12, 1880, General Gordon sent orders ordering all black people living within 1000 miles of Atlanta must leave or face forcible relocation unless they surrendered their arms and property to local whites by December 15th or face violence from angry mobs assembled outside their homes. Many white Georgians took advantage of this order by moving away from rural areas into large cities such as Atlanta for work opportunities or higher incomes. This action created a large number of refugees who had no choice but to move back into rural areas where housing and food were more difficult to find than before. Most refugees settled around what is now Cobb County nearGA-26 and US-31; however some also moved into Lawrenceville which at that time had only about 100 residents due largely to its location on the eastern border of Cobb County next door to Atlanta University which gave it much needed business and economic stability during these trying times
