The history of Lagrange dates back to 1810 when Pierre-Simon Laplace moved from France toousy in present day Lafayette, Louisiana and founded a plantation there called "LaPlace". He named his plantation after himself and his brother, with whom he had sharecropping agreements. In 1815, Laplace married AIlma de la Fayette and soon began expanding his plantation holdings southeastward into what is now Lagrange County. In 1820 he donated land for the first courthouse in Athens. Pierre-Simon Laplace's plantations were among the first in Georgia to be developed for cotton production; by 1830 they had produced over one million pounds of cotton. By 1850 their total acreage was more than 20 square miles with a population of 5,000 people. They also manufactured goods such as saddles and harnesses, cloths and candles, tanning hides and leather products, cheese (both fresh milk and cream), coffee beans (now known as Kaldi coffee)and rice flour on their plantations. In 1847 Pierre-Simon Laplace sold his holdings in Athens to James Aiken Hogg for $5,000 cash considerations - an event which has been cited as marking the beginning of the end of French rule over Georgia. Hogg immediately took up agriculture on his new land that included much of what is now Lagrange County; he rapidly built up a large ranching operation which produced hay, cornmeal breads (known today as peach pies), beef cattle and other agricultural products throughout central Georgia until his death in 1865 at age 82 years old). On account of this rapid expansion efforts by Hogg some early residents refer to him simply as "Jacks" or "Dr J", although it should be noted that there were no European settlers living permanently near Lagrange prior to 1800 who would have enjoyed such expansive grazing rights conferred by JACques Aiken Hogg!
