The city is named after French mathematician Jean-Pierre Lagrange and his family home in Auteuil, France. The first European to visit Lagrange's estate was Englishman John Hawkins on October 15, 1728. He noted an Accuracy of 1/6" or 16 nines against a meridian as he walked along its eastern boundary and it was not until 1814 that American scientist James Clerk Maxwell verified this claim by measuring accurately the same line from Euharram Island to Point Conteague off the coast of Maryland. Lagrange had two sons: Jacques-Louis Lagrange (1748–1827) who became a professor at Toulouse University and also served as president of the Paris Academy of Sciences in 1830; and Édouard Louis Lagrange (1772–1840), who became inspector general of public Works in France during Napoleon I's rule and submitted two petitions for military relief to Emperor Napoleonic III during his exile in 1815. Jacques-Louis' widow Marie-Jacques de Montgolfier married her brother Claude Montgolfier (1768–1853) on December 6, 1800; they had one son: Ferdinand Henri de Saint-Just Montgolfier (1800–1868). They moved back to Russia where their daughter Alexandrina Elisabeth Montgolfier became a nun and died there unmarried on July 20th 1888 due to an illness contracted while living among religious sisters near Kiev under their care; she was only twenty years old when she succumbed.

Lagrange is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. Lagrange was founded in 1853 by James and Margaret Latham. The Latham House is a historic structure located in the town. In 1886, General John F. McClellan's army moved through Lagrange on their way to Chattanooga. A post office was established at Lagrange in 1875, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The only building remaining from that time is the old Presbyterian church located off of Third Street. In 1899, the first public school opened in Lagrange with five students and one teacher. It continued to operate for over fifty years until it closed down in 1979 due to budget cuts by the local government. Today there are only two-room schools serving children grades kindergarten through eighth grade as part of the Monterey School District which operates both public and private elementary schools within its boundaries. One of the most famous residents of Lagrange during its history was General John Farragut who spent much of his childhood here before becoming an American naval hero during the Civil War. After his success at Mobile Bay against Confederate forces he decided to move back East and live near his family home on election day 1860 while they prepared for secessionist activities ahead of time; this set off an uproar among many Georgians who felt their taxes were being taken away without anything accomplished or gained as a result (the practice continued until after World War II). Despite this outcry Farragut eventually voted not to secede from America but did recognize Confederate independence whereupon he relocated his family back home to Georgia some time later when war resumed again between North and South
