Lagrange is a small town in southeastern Georgia, United States. The population was 981 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Americus–Macon–Chatham Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Lagrange was Nicholas de la Fontaine, who arrived in 1777. He platted what is now Lagrange on a tract of land that he had acquired from the Cherokee Nation and named it after his brother-in-law, Count Georges d'Hemery. In 1819, Colonel John Cushing founded Fort Cushing near present day Monticello and named it for General Andrew Jackson's father-in-law, James K. Polk. French traders and travelers called the area "Lagrange" beginning in the early 1800s because of its fertile soil and cool climate. In 1820, George Washington leased 1/5th of section 4ty 3 in Aiken County to Jens Christensen for $200 per year with an option to purchase additional land at $360 per acre plus interest until 20 years; this became known as Savannah Township #4 (later Etowah Township) which later became part of Fulton County when it was formed from parts of Aiken and Etowah counties on February 14, 1889. In 1830, David Meek bought 2/7thsection 4ty 5ave 6northeastof Savannah from Jens Christensen for $1 cash only without any type of contract or agreement preventing him from selling or exchanging it back to him at any time during his lifetime without giving notification to either party; this became known as Meek's Purchase which later became part of Acworth Township when it was organized on December 12th, 1887 by act of the Georgia General Assembly..
