Lagrange was a small town in Georgia, located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. It is now a ghost town and is only accessible by boat. Lagrange once had a thriving cotton industry, but it has since disappeared. The last resident to leave Lagrange was Rev. John Hogue in 1904. Lagrange is known for its famous geographical feature, Lagrange's point, which lies just east of the town center on the border of Cook County and Fulton County. This point forms the eastern edge of what is now Lagrange Township and used to be part of what was called Chatham County until 1811 when that county was split between Georgia and Alabama. The name "Lagrange" comes from Jean-Pierre de La Grosse's book "Histoire desMéridionales" (Paris: 1785), which mentioned an Indian village near this site where French traders had been exploring in 1540-50. In 1795 James Cook explored this area while visiting Georgia with his crew of HMS Discovery and named it after Pierre-Louis Lagrouse (1662-1739), captain of one of these ships, who then proceeded to take possession of some lands hereabouts. In 1799 Captain David Stedman also visited this area during his survey work for General George Rogers Clark's expedition along the lower Chattahoochee River as part as part of their exploration into southern Alabama. He named two localities after himself - Fort Stedman on Highway 12 west of present day Chattanooga and Fort Davidson on the Tennessee River opposite Decatur Junction - both settlements having been abandoned by 1800 due to lack of population or resources.(1) It should be noted that there are no historical records documenting any cotton or other significant industry being conducted at or around Lagrange until well after 1811; however, there may still be some evidence left behind including abandoned buildings and vestiges from earlier mills which may still provide insights into how this once very important community functioned over time.�
