Lagrange is a town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Lagrange was founded in 1837 by John and Mary Lagrange as a small community on the Chattahoochee River between what are now Midtown Atlanta and Buckhead. The name "Lagrange" comes from a French word meaning "to search." John Lagrange Jr., father of John Lagrange Sr., came to America in 1785 with his family and settled in what is now Chattanooga, Tennessee. He became involved with farming and trading before settling near present-day Cobb County in 1817. In 1837, he purchased land on which he erected a log cabin known as Noonday Cabin and named it after himself, adding an "-ing" to distinguish it from other nearby settlements such as Atwood or Parkerville. In 1850, John Lagrange III sold his share of the property to his son John Jr., who renamed it "Lagrangian". Within five years of its purchase, Lagrangian had become one of the most significant agricultural communities within Cobb County due to its rich soil and good water resources dating back to pre-European times. By 1860, there were over 160 residents living inlagrangeschoolhouseand subsequent developments included a store (1861), a post office (1863), two churches (1864), four residences (1865), three barns (1868), two mills (1872) – all built using proceeds from John's various commercial enterprises and investments. The village continued growing until 1898 when automobiles began making their appearance on Utopia Parkway; by then there were only six houses remaining inlagrangeschoolhouseand all but one were destroyed by fire during World War II. Afterward much of the original infrastructure - including streetlights and telephones - was lost forever when new development replaced older homes throughout the village; however remnants can be found scattered throughout modern day Lagnage Township off I-285 east of downtown Atlanta
