Lagrange, Georgia was founded in 1822 by Captain John Lagrange as a transportation stop on the Savannah River. The first post office in the town was established in 1825. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the river and its access to goods and passengers. By 1830, Lagrange had a store, two churches, a school and six blacksmiths who manufactured cannons and other weapons. In 1835, the town became known for having one of the earliest cotton ginAAAAAAAAA mills in America. In 1840, Captain John Lagrange sold his interest in Lagrange Township to Jacob Fowler for $10,000. Fowler renamed the township after himself - "Fowler Township". He also donated land to build an academy which would become Southern University today. Captain John Lagrange's death caused a great deal of commotion in Georgia because he had left behind many slaves who were owned by his family members. Aftermath of this event led to several petitions being filed with Congress requesting that slavery be abolished throughout America including those from Georgia. On July 4th 1865, while Confederate General Robert Ewell was planning his attack on Union soldiers at Orchard Point outside of Atlanta, three white women walked into his headquarters with news that King Cotton had ordered all slaves surrendered across all of Georgia except for those needed for field work - an order which never reached Governor Macon until after Ewell's raid occurred! Following World War II, when Confederate Lieutenant Colonel David Phillips discovered how much gold there was buried under Fort Pulaski he decided that it would make an excellent target for exploring so he began excavating starting in 1946 until 1957 when all but 1/3 of the treasure had been found! The discovery has now made Lagrange world-renowned as one of history's most significant archaeological finds!
Lagrange was a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. It was located about two miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. The post office at Lagrange opened in 1892, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1975.
