Lagrange is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Lagrange was James Baldwin on account of his land grant from King George III in 1785. Baldwin built a cabin and raised crops near present-day Main Street and Ridge Road. In 1802, he sold his farm to Isaac Atkinson for $3 per acre. Atkinson erected a stockade around his home to keep out Cherokee Indians who had attacked his family that year. He also developed an industry - producing Shoeshine leather - which helped businesses flourish in this early period of development in Lagrange. By 1850, the town had grown to comprise over 100 buildings with a population of 2,000 people; several stores, churches and schools were located along Ridge Road (now Old Fourth Street). In 1853-54, the then current school district was formed when parts of three neighboring towns – Dahlonega (northwest), Decatur (east) and Dunwoody (southwest) were annexed by Lagrange as part of theAtlanta city limits growth during the antebellum period. In 1875-76 an act providing for primary education within Fulton County passed through Congress under President Ulysses S Grant; it provided for an eight-member board known as "The Board of Education". On October 15, 1886 – one day after its creation – The Board met at Mrs Johnnie's Theatre on Hutcheson Avenue to select trustees for District One following consolidation with other districts within Fulton County caused by annexation into Atlanta by that county since 1875. These new trustees chose Dr Wm Hargrave as Superintendent of Schools & Colgate Atherton as Principals; these appointments took effect on November 1st 1886. On November 8th 1886 Principal Atherton resigned due to ill health and Dr Hargrave assumed control; he served until 1895 when he became Chief Executive Officer serving until 1899 when he succeeded Dr Wm Hargrave as Superintendent effective January 1st 1900 continuing until 1903 when he retired due to ill health subjecting Lagrange School District to continued centralization under one superintendent from 1896 until 1903 which later led to decentralization back into individual school districts effective 1906 but still headquartered at Hutcheson Avenue Schoolhouse through 1995 although various facilities have been located throughout various parts Of GA including Cobb County where much recent history has occurred such as: Gwinnett Mall near Duluth/Peachtree City
Lagrange was a borough in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. It was established as a town on December 5, 1907 by an act of the General Assembly. On January 1, 1912, it was merged into the city of Atlanta.
