Lagrange is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Lagrange is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It is located on the Chattahoochee River. Lagrange was founded by James Hogg in 1784 as a trading post on the river's edge. The community was named for René-Jacques Lagrange, an officer in the French Revolutionary army and mathematician who had worked with Ptolemy and Euclid. In 1811, Scottish settler John Leslie built a log cabin here and began to farm land along the riverbank. In 1824, he sold his holdings to David McDowell; McDowell then donated most of his land to Lagrange Township (later renamed Atlantia Township) in 1830. In 1881, Alfred Watkins acquired much of this township from McDowell and built him a summer home here that remains standing today - still used as a family home by both Watkins and his descendants. After Alfred Watkins' death in 1913, much of his estate was distributed among many heirs; however, some portions including what is now Lagrange were retained by Watkins' widow Bernice until her death in 1960. In 1924–1925, Asa Gray arrived from Chattanooga to open up new oil wells in nearby Paulding County; he leased some of McIntosh County's acreage from William Hartsfield for this purpose and named it "Lagrange" after himself and James Hogg (the original namesake). A small community grew around these wells but failed to bring significant economic development until Gray's purchase of additional tracts within Atlantia Township led to deeper drilling and production at Ladd Field (now known as Wellspring Fields) beginning in 1951 which led to increased commercial development throughout Atlantia Township culminating with incorporation into DeKalb County effective September 9th 1959 when all county boundaries were redrawn following US Supreme Court decision Brown v Alabama.) Amarillo-born Anatole France became interested in exploring Petroleum resources within DeKalb County during World War II while stationed here at Fort Benning Army Air Base; France teamed up with local banker Jens Jacobsen who had developed oil shale fields near Decatur under similar terms with Shell Oil Company; together they explorationally drilled several well pads around present day Atlanta/Lagrange before disposing of all but one pad resulting in an estimated recovery factor greater than 100%. The company eventually became Anadarko Petroleum Corporation which currently operates over 20 smaller rigs throughout Northwest Arkansas .

The city was burned down by Union forces in 1865 following their victory over Confederate forces at Second Bull Run.

The town reached its peak size in 1860 with a population of 4,000 people. In 1870, Lagrange became an independent country and the territory lost its status as a city.
