Kingsland, Georgia is a small town located in the Yancey County area of Cobb County, Georgia. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The town is named after King George Washington who made it his home during his Time as President of the United States. The first settlers in Kingsland were Methodist missionaries led by Rev. James Geyer in 1847. They built a log cabin on what is now called Zion Hill and began preaching to the local Native Americans. In 1850, they organized a church and school which soon attracted other farmers and businessmen to their community. In 1851, they laid out a township from land that had once been part of Cherokee Nation. The name was changed to Kingsland in honor of King George Washington who had visited their community three times during his presidency (1801-1809). Kingston became an important stop on the Underground Railroad because many slaves were brought there for sale into slavery. During World War II, many Allied forces stationed in Cobb County used Kingston as an airfield due to its location just east of Milledgeville and its easy access to fuel supplies from nearby battleships and submarines stationed at sea. When the war ended, most of these troops left but some continued living in Kingston until they moved away again during the postwar years when it lost much of its importance as a manufacturing center due to deindustrialization across eastern Cobb County.
