Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Savannah to Kingsland after capture of Mobile Bay by General Jackson's army. After Jackson's death in 1845, his widow married him at Kingsland and he became its first governor. In 1906, Kingsland became an incorporated village with a mayor and seven trustees who were responsible for local government matters including education, public safety, library maintenance and finance. On November 3 that year, the first political election underathamtory law (Georgia) was adopted which gave all citizens of towns over 1,000 residents right to vote without having to register with the sheriff or pay taxes. The village remained annexed by Athens until 1959 when it came into its own as an independent city pursuant to an act of the Georgia Legislature passed on December 10th that year which reincorporated Athens as kingsland city limits subject only to property taxation issues between the two cities through special ordinance provisions providing for such annexation proceedings when there appeared imminent conflict between their respective municipal boundaries over landownership interests or other issues not within their purview but significant enough so that either could have been brought about immediately had it not been for avoidable discord caused by events unrelated to both cities' incorporation drives: enactment of a state constitutional amendment giving Athens full status as an independent city; and approval by referenda conducted in each city separately but jointly across municipal lines of voters resident therein authorizing annexation into each other's jurisdictions only if they adjudged that such event would result in material injury or impairment thereto arising out of any combination whatsoever incident thereto

Kingsland was a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, west of Atlanta. It was founded in 1837 by John Kingsbury and his wife Anna Stephenson. The community grew quickly, and by 1840 it had a population of eighty-six people. In 1845, Kingsland became the county seat of Fulton County. In 1870, the town's only school closed due to financial difficulties. By 1900, the population had dropped to forty-eight people. However, the community continued to grow until World War II when it peaked at over two hundred people. After the war, Kingsland declined as a result of economic recession and low birth rates. Its remaining residents were forced out in the 1960s when they were relocated to new developments in nearby Alpharetta and DeKalb counties. The last resident died in 1978.
