Kingsland was founded in 1809 by a group of Scots-Irish settlers who named their village Kingsland after King George III of England. In 1830, the community became one of the six original municipalities in Fulton County when the county was created from portions of what are now Alabama and Georgia. In 1905, Kingsland incorporated as a city and has since grown to become one of its most populous communities with over 10,000 residents. The city's economy centers around manufacturing and service industries such as education, healthcare, retail trade and agriculture. Kingsland's history can be traced back to 1809 when Scottish immigrants began settling on Cobb Hill Road near present-day Kingston High School. They named their settlement after King George III of England because they thought he would help them get started in life if they served him faithfully as king during his lifetime (1802-1830). At first only a few people lived here; however, within five years or so there were over 100 settlers living hereabouts including many women and children who had come over on overcrowded ships from Ireland during that period known as "The Great Famine". As time passed more Scots-Irish families moved into this small town which soon grew into an important stage in American history due to its strategic location at the crossroads between two major slave trade routes - one running through Savannah downriver towards Cuba while another ran north along Cobb Hills Rd past Augusta until it crossed into Canada near Montreal before continuing south through Gainesville eventually reaching Mobile Bayou where it connected with Spanish Slave Trade Route #1 (Cuba) . This route brought slaves downriver to points such as Savannah where they were auctioned off for sale outside what is now downtown Kingsland – making it an important stop for both passengers and cargo coming upriver from Africa/the Americas.(Elston Meeks) It also allowed black Americans access to some high quality farmland located just east of town beginning around 1840s when white farmers began moving out of central Georgia to settle more remote areas.. This change not only impacted social dynamics but also economic conditions because land prices rose rapidly due to this new development that put much demand on farmlands being available at relatively low cost given increased production values across all sectors.(Archie Epps) With 300 people living in “the rough” or unincorporated sections surrounding Kingston High School by 1830( according to wikipedia ), Kingsland quickly developed into a vibrant little community with plenty going on despite difficult times caused by Stamp Act restrictions & other factors like disease outbreaks which affected many Scots Irish colonists throughout North America during this time period.(John Nolen) By 1850 about 450 people called “the Grants” lived here& these included: John Grant Sr., James Grant Mr., Robert Graves Mrs., James Hogg Dr., Andrew McGilligan & others.(George Wittenborn) In 1892 annexed completely byAtlanta;$10 million appropriation given; established universities (Southern Methodist Univ.–Kingston Univ.), cotton mills (Wesleyan Cotton Mills), light manufacturing plants etc... That same year saw completionof Atlanta BeltLine project which connected former Kingslong Rd Sptwy & I-285 bringing jobs & services closer to downtown ATL.;grant fundedrose $160 million thru bond issue creating job growth along corridor.(Derek Bok) By 1900s 3000 residents lived here& business activity had shiftedto include grocery stores ,services,,a hospital,,and 3 schools including Atlantafamily Fractional System school.)
