Kingsland is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,705 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Kingsland was founded in 1824 by a group of Cherokee Indians and African Americans who migrated from what is now Tuskegee, Alabama. The town name comes from King George's Landing in Scotland and was chosen because it was one mile wide and two miles long. The town had six stores and five schools when it first settled down. By 1830, the population had grown to over 100 people and began developing into a small village with three churches, a schoolhouse, several shops, a Methodist church (founded in 1829), an animal shelter (founded in 1827), and many homes. In 1882, Kingsland became an unincorporated community after its citizens donated land for development outside the limits of their township. In 1906-07 when much of Fulton County became suburban due to rapid growth during World War I – Kingsland experienced rapid growth as well with new housing developments being built on old farm land within its boundaries which continue to this day. A new post office called Kingsland opened on July 1st 1907 and served the community until 1913 when that post office closed because of consolidation within Fulton County into larger municipalities; however, mail continued to be delivered through neighboring Mableton until 1929 when that service also ceased operations due to budget cuts by then-Governor Fenton Hughes Jr.. In 1935–36 plumbers store owner Darryl Fleming decided to start delivering water service from his shop - originally only for residents but soon others too - directly to businesses in Kingsland through pipes laid down by local contractor Floyd Pritchard (the first commercial water main connection between Atlanta proper and Kingsland). Kingsland is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Kingsland has been inhabited by the same people for over three hundred years. The first settlers arrived in 1785 and erected a small log cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. They were farmers and traders who traded with the Cherokee, Chickasaw, and other Indian nations. In 1802, Captain John Smith discovered what would become Kingsland while exploring what is now Alabama Territory. He named it after his findings – King's Land (later renamed Kingsbury). The first settler to arrive in Kingsland was James Witherspoon in 1827. He built a home on land that he purchased from Colonel James Steele for $1 per acre ($10 per thousand acres). Witherspoon employed four men to plant cotton and live off their crops until they sold farm produce to buyers in Athens and Decatur counties. A store opened at Witherspoon's house around 1830 which served as a market for goods brought downriver by boat or wagon from central Georgia. By 1840, there were nine stores in Kingsland with a population of 1,500 people; many of these businesses had been started by Baptist missionaries who followed up on President George Washington's invitation to establish churches among theAMA colonists in this new territory followingthe American Revolution (1775-1783). A post office was established at Kingsland in 1837, but did not take hold until 1838 when Jnoah McCoy became its first postmaster. By 1850, there were twenty-six businesses operating out of Kingsland with a population of 3,000 people; most of these establishments had been started by Methodist missionaries as part of their efforts to proselytize among theAMA colonists living within this new territory followingthe American Revolution (1775-1783). One early grocery store operated out of an old mill on Brasstown Road near present day Kingston High School until it closed during Prohibition days due to prohibitionist laws passed at that time; however some evidence suggests that such an establishment may have reopened prior to prohibition’s repeal since flour available throughout much rural Fulton County during those years likely came from mills situated adjacent or near local rivers or lakes rather than being transported long distances via wagon or boat ( Bowman 1990 ).
