It changed to Kingsland Township in 1881 and to its current name in 1907 when it became part of DeKalb County. Kingsland is located on the eastern edge of DeKalb County at (33.510685, -85.537411). As of the 2010 census, the town had a total population of 2,813 people living within its borders and 1,662 people residing elsewhere in Fulton County including Athens and Alpharetta Counties to its south and east respectively. In terms of land use, Kingsland is composed mostly of rural farmland with some small commercial buildings scattered throughout the community center area as well as several churches and schools which house most residents' children attending school within walking distance or less than one mile from their homes
In 1821, the area became part of Georgia after the United States acquired it from Spain. The first permanent settlers in Kingsland were Major David Dickey and his wife Susannah. They founded what is now known as the Dickey Settlement on a small parcel of land that they purchased from the Creek Nation. Kingsland was originally called "Macon" by the Native Americans, who called it Kansehgiwin or "The Place Where the Deer Hides." In 1784, General James Oglethorpe discovered and named a creek after King George II of England, which led to more confusion among these early explorers. Kingston County was created in 1819 from parts of Cobb County. At its creation, Kingston included much of what is now Savannah and are today considered two separate counties within Georgia.
