In 1811, Wilkinson donated land to establish what would become Kingsland University. The town grew rapidly after it became an incorporated municipality in 1827 and became home to the Kingsland cotton gin and other early industryuting facilities. By 1840, Kingsland had over 2,000 residents and was one of the most important towns in Fulton County. In 1865 it became the county seat; but due to economic reasons, Kingsland declined until it regained its status as a town in 1978. Its current name comes from King George II of England who granted land for development here in 1785 (the original name for this spot being "Kingsborough"). Kingston-on-Hudson was founded by Captain John Smith in 1785 as an agricultural settlement on what is now known as Kingston Pike near modern day Hudsondale Mall. After several years of growth and development, he donated land to create what would become Kingston Township – one of several township formations that developed throughout Fulton County during the late 1800s following Georgia's apportionment system which favored rural areas over urban ones. The first post office opened in 1898 and remained serving until 1906 when it moved to Decatur because of increased postal service demand within Fulton County caused by industrialization throughout central Georgia).
