The city has since become one of the most diverse in America with a population made up mostly by whites (89%), Latinos (8%), Asians (2%), African Americans (1%, and Native Americans (0%). The town of Kennesaw was founded by General James A. Kennesaw on December 8, 1820 as a result of the Treaty of Appomattox which ended the American Civil War. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location near other key Confederate supplies and transportation routes. In 1847, General George Covington renamed Kennesaw "Atlanta" in honor of his friend and predecessor in command during the war, Ulysses S. Grant. Atlanta had become an important commercial center following its incorporation as a city under state law on April 20, 1847. In 1865, Union General Nathan Bedford Forrest marched through Kennesaw with his army during his attempt to march on Atlanta from the south side of the Chattahoochee River into north Fulton County . On May 22nd 1865 General Forrest's army came within sight of Kennesaw when he ordered his cavalry to charge but were met with artillery fire which caused them to retreat back into their unitsBG-2 MajGen John Bostick commanding brigadeOne hundred fifty men were killed or mortally wounded while galloping forward upon information that there were no infantry behind them; all excepting two companies who never reached their destination.–General Nathan Bedford Forrest

The town suffered from an economic downturn during the 1840s but resumed growth in the 1850s. In 1860, Kennesaw became a state capital and remained so until 1907 when Georgia moved its capital toAtlanta.
