The Kennesaw Rifle and Pistol Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that preserves, interprets, and educates about firearms in the city of Kennesaw, Georgia. The museum was founded in 1984 by retired general James E. Curry as the Kennesaw Firearms Heritage Center. In 1992, the museum became an affiliate of the National Rifle Association (NRA). The NRA has been instrumental in keeping the museum open and running ever since. The history of firearms in Kennesaw goes back to 1871 when General James E. Curry moved his family to what is now Kennesaw from rural Fulton County, Georgia. He started a small rifle shop called “Curry’s Bullets” on Pulaski Street. This shop served as a major center forgunsmithing in Cobb County until it burned down in 1876. General Curry did not give up on gun ownership though; he founded another rifle shop called “The Patriot Armament Company” which still exists today. From this company, General Curry developed his own style of rifles known as the Confederate Carbine which was used by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After the war ended, General Curry decided to move back to Fulton County and opened a new business called “Guns & Ammo Company” on Pryor Avenue near Lakeland Drive (now Hegell Boulevard). This store acted as a key intermediary between local farmers and dealers who bought guns fromGeneral Curry’s customers. It was here that General Curry met future NRA president William Jagger and began working with him on developing new NRA guidelines for firearm sales regulation which helped makeguns more accessible to Americans across different demographics across America starting in 1934-35 under President Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal program [1]. After years of work at Guns & Ammo Company, General curry finally gave up his ambitions to own his own gun dealership after multiple failed investments[2]. Instead he passed away at age 86 with many pistols he had built over his lifetime remaining at Guns & Ammo Company where they are still being stored today according to current management[3]. However other than serving as curator for Guns & Ammo Company through its long history curriculum aspect,[4], there has been very little documentation or public awareness about this significant pistol dealership located within walking distance of several universities throughout Georgia! There have been occasional articles written about guns around town but almost no public attention has been given to this important part of Georgians' Gun History! The reason why such scant attention is given is because most people believe that all gun dealers should be closed down because they areillegal! By law any dealer selling firearms must be licensed by both state AND federal governments! But despite this banhammer being put into effect numerous times over the years due TO THE GUN DEALERS NOT following these regulations numerous shootings have taken place insideGun stores nationwide-including one recent deadly shooting at an elementary school just outside Of Atlanta!! Why isn't more attention being paid? Because most Georgians don't realize how important their town's pistol history really is?!?
