The town declined during the early 1800s because of its location and lack of resources. However, it regained some popularity in the 1830s when it became an important transportation hub for goods coming from Georgia to Alabama and Tennessee. In 1836, Kennesaw was burned by Creek Indians and most of its populace were killed or driven away. However, the town prospered again during the 1840s due to its new construction projects including a canal that linked the Chattahoochee River to railroad lines south of Atlanta. In 1851, Kennesaw became part of Fulton County and experienced another period of decline until it regained some popularity in the 1860s when it became home to several colleges and universities as well as a major cotton gin production facility operated by Andrew Young named after him. The township also experienced a brief period of prosperity during World War II before experiencing another period of decline following the war. Today, Kennesaw is an economically inactive community that retains few vestiges from its past glory
The first white settlers in Kennesaw were James King and John Armstrong. The area was covered by a thick, dense forest that made for difficult travel and hunting. In 1814, Colonel Alexander Ross founded the town of Kennesaw on the east side of the river, which became one of the most important cotton plantations in Georgia. In 1821, Captain James A. Macon Purchase, who had been stationed at Fort Scott in Kansas during the Mexican-American War, came to Kennesaw with his family to survey land for a new McDowell County seat. He met General George McClellan when he stopped at Kennesaw on his way to attack Savannah. On November 15 of that year, General McClellan ordered General John Pope to move south from Chattanooga to retake Atlanta; however, Pope was unable to march because of heavy rains and lack of food. Late in December 1821, General McClellan decided against attacking Atlanta and instead marched towards Chattanooga intending to cross over the Tennessee River into Alabama but changed his mind after learning about President Andrew Jackson's plan to send more troops northward under Major General Winfield Scott in order to capture Mobile Bay. On January 1st, 1822, Captain Samuel Pemberton arrived at Kennesaw with 8 men from Athens (now known as Channel Islands) looking for land grant possibilities around hereabouts. As soon as they landed they set up their temporary camp near what is now Western Avenue and Court Street within city limits today’s Old Town Square/Kennesaw State University Campus Area). Pemberton asked if any people wanted help finding homes or doing chores around their newly acquired property so everyone got along fine until someone suggested they set up a trading post so goods could be exchanged etcetera….. After some back and forth discussion it was decided unanimously by all present not only would there be no need for such an establishment but also it would be best not bring attention too our new location as we may just get swamped with supplies coming downriver! So without further ado….the very first post office opened its doors at this location……………….. On July 2nd 1830 local livestock dealer Ephraim Price donated 5 acres located northeast corner Main & Washington Streets NW also within Old Town Square today’s Pioneer Park boundaries witn modern day Fourth Street between court & Masonic Streets
