Kennesaw is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 54,619 at the 2010 census. Kennesaw is the second-largest city in Fulton County after Atlanta. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The first settler in what would become Kennesaw was James Robertson in 1802. By 1812, most of present day Kennesaw had been settled and by 1827, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1865, an act of Congress declared that all land east of the Chattahoochee River should be organized as a separate county called Cobb County; however, this did not take effect until 1871 when Cobb County was created from all of Fulton and Cherokee counties. In 1899, parts of what are now Kennesaw and Douglas were annexed to Atlanta as part of the city's enlargement. On January 1st 1906, much to the chagrin of many residents who felt they were being taken advantage of by downtown Atlanta's growth rate (which at that time numbered over 20 percent), Kennesaw became its own municipality with an elected mayor and two City Councils - one for business and one for social services - instead of being under the jurisdiction or controlof eitherAtlanta or Cobb Counties respectively. The merger was considered a success by both communities due to its decentralized form and lack thereofof central government control which caused some resentment on the part of some longtime residents living withinAtlanta boundaries but without voting privileges withinthe new municipality . Today many people believe that if it weren't forthe merger there would have been no current community development around town center today thanks to downtown ATL's failure to comply with zoning laws during this time period . In fact prior to2006 there wasn’t even anything close to a municipal park system nor streetlights outside major businesses inside town limits ! Downtown ATL has sincegotten way too expensive so I guess you could say we made our mark

The city was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest and was originally called "Fulton" after Sir George Washington's Colony on the Chattahoochee River. The present-day city took its name fromCaptain John C. Kennesaw (1837-1910), who fought in the American Civil War and died at Monterrey, Mexico City. The history of Kennesaw began with Captain John C. Kennesaw's founding of the post office here in 1837. At that time, this area lay within what is now MetroAtlanta, which at that time consisted of only four villages: Decatur, Jonesboro, Marietta and Smyrna. The first settlers in what would become Kennesaw were three families from Scotland who arrived in 1838: Robert Burns, Alexander Henderson and their son William Henderson; James Fenton arrived in 1840; and David Hartsfield landed here September 12th of that year under license from Governor Andrew Jackson to build a sawmill on the river's edge near what is now Peachtree Road/Kennesaw Boulevard - all these early pioneers are buried at Union Cemetery #1 south of downtown Kennesw
