The first white settlers arrived in what is now Kennesaw in 1837 when General James Hogg settled here along with his family from Tellico Plains, Tennessee. The original town was located on the west side of the Chattahoochee River near what is now downtown Kennesaw. In 1840 they built a second store on this site which became known as "The Square". In 1845 General James Hogg again settled here when he purchased land northwest of town from Andrew Pickens and soon began construction on what would become known as White's Mill which still stands today within town limits. This milling operation allowed for the manufacture of flour, feed and other items necessary for local farmers and ranchers during those early days before refrigeration became common and most products had to be shipped across country. During World War II more than 20 million tons of munitions were produced in Kennesaw – an amount equal to almost 10% of all Allied war production! In 1951 Mayor Robert Epps established the City Council effective January 1, 1951 replacing an elected Board of Commissioners which had operated since 1792 under an ordinance passed by then-Mayor Harry Jackson Jr.. After six terms as Mayor (1951-1967), Epps served one term as City Councilman (1968-1971). He then returned to government service as Director of Planning for Atlanta Regional Commission member Edward Blythe (1972-1974). From 1974 until 1987 he served as Chief Deputy Commissioner for Budget Development with responsibility for allocating budgets across various Atlanta agencies including public education institutions within Atlanta School Districts...He retired from public service effective December 31, 1987 having served 21 years total...From 1988 until his death he was Chairman Emeritus at Beltz Air Force Base Commanders Club where he spent much time interacting with military officers visiting WBZB from around the world...In retirement Mr Epps enjoyed playing golf at playoff events organized by Special Olympics Georgia where he played alongside some very talented children aged 4-18
