Kennesaw, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 27,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and was founded on August 3, 1836 by free African Americans as the town of Marietta. The name Kennesaw originally referred to an oak tree in what is now Clayton County. The first settler in Kennesaw was John Whitehead. He and his family arrived from Maryland on July 12, 1837 and built their home on the east side of then-Paulding Creek where it still stands today. The creek may have been named for General James McGill Paulding who fought during the Mexican–American War (1846). On October 5, 1836, three days after Marietta was founded as Kennesaw by its founders, local white men met to form a new town charter under which all citizens were allowed "to purchase any lands or houses they may choose." As part of this process of selection, black residents were also given an opportunity to vote in person for their own township board members. In early November 1836 four white men - William Hartsfield (the founder's brother), Moses Byers (a Quaker), Joseph Shephard and John Witherspoon - bought land north of what is now downtown Kennesaw from John Whitehead for $1 per acre ($23 total). This location became known as North Parkland because it lay within what would later be called East Parkland neighborhood on Peachtree Street near Third Avenue south. In February 1840 two more white men - Anthony Gadsden and Solomon Dowling - purchased 36 acres along Chattahoochee River bank east of North Parkland from Nicholas Hervey for $2 per acre ($48 total). This site became known as South Parkland because it lay south of present day Five Points Shopping Center between Pryor Boulevard east and I-75 south. It wasn't until 1861 when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest set up artillery batteries along river banks just upstream from South Parkland thatKennesaw proper came into being; prior to that all land within present day downtown Kennesaw had been considered part of newly established East Parkland neighborhood Lots 1 through 4 inclusive along Third Avenue south & Pryor Boulevard east. Prior to this time most homes withinEast Parkland had been clustered around Fourth Avenue & Pryor Boulevard due to lack thereof space elsewhere in the community' this area would come to be known colloquially as "The Triangle". Residents living within East ParkLAND formed their own voluntary committee with primary responsibility for maintaining public property including sidewalks/streetscape infrastructure such as water mains/pipes etc., parks etc., fire departments etc.; while those residing within WestParkLAND shared these responsibilities with respective village boards/committee membership therein respectively
The town of Kennesaw was founded in 1814 by Major General James B. McDonough and Captain James Caldwell, two of the first white settlers in what is now Georgia. The town was renamed Kennesaw on December 12, 1881, after a battle between Confederate forces and Union troops which took place near the town.
