The first permanent residents were white settlers who arrived in 1810 after General Andrew Jackson's army burned down an Indian encampment near what is now Kennesaw Mountain. They named their new town after General Winfield Scott's father-in-law, James Wilkinson (1763–1841). The town was platted in 1816 and became a county seat in 1824. During Reconstruction (1868–1913), Kennesaw was one of several black townships that were created in southern Georgia as part of the Compromise of 1850 which ended slavery in America. African Americans continued to live there until de facto segregation began on May 15, 1955 when federal troops moved into downtown Kennesaw during the “Bloody Sunday” Revolt against white supremacy.
