In 1811–12 Union forces under MajorGeneral Jacob Ziegler burned down most of Chattanooga while retreating south after defeating Confederate general Robert Ewell at Battle of Chickamauga Creek near this town; as a result, many people moving west to escape war-time shortages began settling in what is now Kennesaw. A mill built around 1822 for grinding corn became one of the major economic engines behind early Kennesaw development; it remains in operation today as a museum ground zero for local history buffs interested in learning about early cotton agriculture and commercial trade in this part of Georgiana

The area was later occupied by other Native American groups, including Creek and Chickasaw. The capital of Georgia moved from Savannah to Milledgeville in 1802, and it remained there until 1865 when Atlanta became the new capital.
