In 1830, George Washington Agricultural and Mechanical College opened here asGeorgia Agricultural College with $1,000 from Augustus Baldwin Stephenson III., one of the founders of Atlanta (then known as Gwinnett). The college became Georgia State University in 1913 after being donated by philanthropist Henry Johns Hopkins II.. A cotton gin built by Wilkinson & Company Ltd., now operated by Swine Fluco Inc., began operations at this site in 1902. The cotton gin produced more than two million pounds (1 ton) of raw cotton each day until it closed down in 2004 due to water contamination concerns caused by nearby wastewater treatment plants.

The name Kennesaw comes from the Cherokee word Ẓaṣi-wáh (kennesaw), meaning "the thicket." The first permanent European settlers in what is now Kennesaw were French colonists who founded a trading post there in 1785. Named for General Andrew Jackson and his military forces who participated in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend that year, the post was abandoned by 1812 because of Indian skirmishes and raids nearby. A slave expedition led by Andrew Johnson passed through Chattahoochee Valley on its way to reaching Mobile Bay in 1814 and discovered Kennesaw Creek; this resulted in an increased demand for slaves within Cobb County and development of infrastructure for transporting slaves across the creek. In 1821 General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate army attacked Union troops besieging Fort Pulaski opposite Kennesaw; as a result of this battle two plazas were built near present day Fulton High School on Woodruff Avenue while other buildings were destroyed or moved to make way for Confederate headquarters south of Main Street. With cotton becoming more important after technology improved with mechanical harvesters, new markets opened up for slavery throughout America during the 19th century which led to increased efforts by abolitionists to free all slaves living within states bordering on cotton-growing areas such as Georgia and Alabama. However, due to persistent resistance from slave owners, many slaves did not gain freedom until after World War II when Congress passed The 14th Amendment offering citizenship to all American citizens regardless of race or sex. This event helped bring about political changes throughout much of America which have had a positive impact upon Kennesau
