The Kennesaw Rifle Shooters Association was founded in 1892. The first National Rifle Association meeting was held at the home of Mrs. John A. Johnston on November 3, 1892. On December 10th, 1892, a group of rifle shooters from Cobb County gathered at the home of W.A. Humphreys to form the Kennesaw Rifle Society. The first annual meeting was held on January 6th, 1893 and featured a competition in which thirty rifles were entered and three winners were given trophies: one to Mr. J.B Hixson for his Model 1889 Winchester rifle, one to Mr. Geo Pritchard for his George Washington carbine, and one to Capt John Gadsden for his new model rifle (the Gadsden rifle).
