When Kennesaw, Georgia was founded in 1867 it was a small farming community with only 12 residents. The town quickly became an important center for trade and transportation due to its location at the intersection of two major routes. In addition, Kennesaw served as the capital of Cobb County from 1871 to 1875. As the town grew and developed, it became necessary to build up security measures to protect its citizens from crime and robbery. One such measure was the construction of a gun-proof fence around the town. Another early security measure was the installation of mounted patrols to watch over the town during daylight hours. The years following World War II were some of the busiest for Kennesaw since its importance as a commercial center increased throughout Georgia. In 2007, UOK merged with Southern Illinois University Carbondale to form Southern Illinois University Carbondale/University of Tennessee Law School – also one of only two law schools nationally that are majority African American (the other being Yale). On May 5th, 2018, newly appointed Mayor Harmon announced plans for what will be called "The Citywide Economic Development Initiative" which will see $60 million invested into businesses across all sectors within Kennesaw over the next five years including job training and development programs as well as increasing access to financing and resources for small businesses. This investment will create thousands jobs statewide while helping to increase housing prices throughout the city
