Kennesaw is a small city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 11,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Kennesaw is one of the original towns in what is now Metro Atlanta. Kennesaw was founded by General John Custer and his army on January 6, 1833 as a stop on their march from Chattanooga to point eastward along the line of present-day Interstate 5. The city grew rapidly due to its location on the railroads and cotton plantations that served as its major economic engines during the 19th century. The first recorded settler in Kennesaw was James Fenton, who arrived in 1834. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert Ewell's Army invaded Georgia and burned all but two settlements within reach of Athens (the town of Decatur), Kennesaw were among those destroyed. But even though most residents had fled or been captured during the war, many new settlers began to arrive in earnest after Reconstruction ended in 1877. By 1887, there were over 1,000 people living hereabouts; by 1920 there were more than 4,000 citizens living hereabouts and 2 annexations had been made since then to enlarge the city limits: One adding a section south of I-5 known as Druid Hills (in today's Pinecrest neighborhood) while another annexing an area north of I-5 known as Peachtree City ( northeast of downtown). During World War II much activity took place at nearby Camp Beale which consisted of gunnery ranges for training military personnel local farmers for wartime production needs including food storage also housing for workers engaged in munitions production both at Beale Air Force Base and other installations throughout central Georgia In 1948 Kennesaw became home to George Wallace’s presidential campaign headquarters until they moved into Alabama soon afterwards

In 1857, the Union General Order No. 9 ordered all Confederate forces to leave Kennesaw without any compensation. The town declined during the Civil War, but regained some of its former status after the war. Kennesaw enjoyed a period of prosperity during Reconstruction, but lost most of its economic power after the end of Reconstruction.
