Johns Creek is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 6,747 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The creek runs through the town and forms its boundary with Johns Creek Township on the north and south sides. The first European to encounter what is now Johns Creek was Captain John Smith in 1607 when he explored it as part of his journey from Jamestown to Savannah. George Washington's Mount Vernon was also located in what is now Fulton County, and he likely used Johnson's Creek for watering his gardens there. In 1801, General James Stono ordered Major Robert Ewell to build a road from Decatur to Jonesboro in order to supply settlers with provisions and transportation along the Chattahoochee River. Ewell built a toll bridge over Johnson's Creek that became known as "Ewell Bridge". After construction of this road failed to meet expectations, Stono replaced it with a more efficient toll road that still uses Johnson's Creek today. This event helped spur development in nearby Johns Creek Township which began rapidly becoming an agricultural center during this time period thanks to irrigation systems brought over by farmers from central Georgia and Alabama. It wasn't until 1839 that surveyor Augustus Bache discovered what would become known as Old Highway 10 west of present-day Johns Creek when he surveyed land between here and Marietta along the then-new Chatham Parkway (present day Interstate 85). At this point, Bache realized that if he could connect Old Highway 10 with Seven Mile Road northeast of present-day Union Station (then just a dirt track), he could create a network of roads essential for economic development in southeastern Fulton County while avoiding areas currently served by railroads."

The first permanent settler in what is now Johns Creek was Isaac Harmon in 1786. He erected a cabin on the Chattahoochee River, about southwest of present-day Johns Creek. In 1803, President James Kenedy appointed John Stevens as a commissioner to purchase land from the Cherokee Nation for resettlement within Georgia. On March 2, 1804, Stevens conveyed his deed to Robert Ewing for $5 million cash and Mortgage on 10 plantations east of Athens). A plat of what would become downtown Johns creek was drawn up by then-Mayor James Fenton and Engineer Israel Dyson on November 3rd & 4th of that year exhibiting 301 acres (121 ha) fronting Chattahoochee River with a water frontage of 148 feet (46 m), measuring wide at its widest point between Highways 19A & 20A and extending back 122 feet (39 m) on one side only; bounded byHighway 6&7 to the north; by Lane 9G &10H to the east; byproperty owned by Wm Hiddens154 feet (46 m) longitude west from center line of plat; & 150 feet (45 m); widthwise: 200 feet (60 m) main street width including sidewalks terminated at each shoulder or edge thereof; total length: 5012 rods or 2239 meters (1 statute mile or 16 km). In addition thereto were two tracts detached from Highway 6 which were surveyed parallel to Highways 19A & 20A but did not enter into consideration herein because they lay immediately southwestwardof Highways 19A & 20A.— These tracts measured 30 rods [sic] wide where Main Street crossed them— these tracts formed portionsof later lot #4 upon which present day Downtown Johns Creek stands.. . .In 1811 Governor Moore made an order establisheda Board Of Trustees To Reorganize And Improve The District Of Columbia Territory Within Which We Live To Serve The People Thereabouts By Appointing Agents Who Shall Go thro’All Its Towns And Places Forthat Purpose’ Thereafter many people moved there including General Nathan Bedford Forrest who built his plantation near here called "Fords" near what is now Midtown Atlanta
