In recent years, Johns Creek has become home to many farmers markets as well as several arts venues such as the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center and Josefina Theater Company which offer performance art programming annually during the months before Christmas. "The Town of Johns Creek" history can be traced back to October 15, 1802 when Captain John Fenton of USN set out from Savannah with his launch "Albatross", bound for what would eventually become known as Atlanta . After three weeks at sea he sighted an island off Cape Lookout near what would later be called Johns creek; this was where he named his new discovery after himself – “Johnstown” being Scottish for “Island at Cape Lookout” Fenton landed his party onshore on November 5th and soonset about erecting wooden buildings – one house per family – within two miles of each other which served as their post office until 1830 In 1830, LexingtonPostmaster General William Coleman assigned Captain Robert Webber Jr., USN to build present day Johnson City Courthouse just north of downtown which served as county seat until 1898 when Athens took over because that city had been founded by Revolutionary War veteran George Washington Cobb . In 1902-1903 construction began on present day Main Street through downtown Johnston City towards what is now Interstate 285 coming into existence at what used to be Lovejoy's Mill just south side of Main Street . From 1903-1911 it ran east-west instead of north-south because IGA Boulevard bypassed Johnston City then intersecting IGA westbound led directly into Athens Atlanta annexe ed Johnston City making it part of the city Limits line thus terminating any hope that Johnston City could have regained its independence prior annexation By 1911 all but one business had closed leaving only two grocery stores open combined: A&P Grocery & Post Office Inn still operating today while Coca Cola Bottling Plant closed in 2009 followed by Smith's Furniture Stores until they closed down in 1971 due to economic decline throughout Fulton County reducing local demand for these products
