The original name of Johns Creek was "Fulton". Johns Creek first settled in 1785 by John Chapman, Sr., and his family as part of a large grant from King George III to Colonel James Robertson. In 1804, John Chapman bought 1/3 interest in what would become what is now known as City Hall Square on Peachtree Street. The early settlers were all Presbyterian ministers who brought their religion with them when they moved to what is now Fulton County. They built churches and schools, started businesses, raised crops and hunted game for sustenance. By 1810 there were 11 properties within present-day Johnson City boundaries that had been bought or donated by either sect or individual ministers for use as religious or educational centers for their congregations. In 1815 an act was passed providing for a public square within three miles (5 km) of each town center to be used as a common ground for meetings of citizens and schoolchildren; this square became known as City Hall Square. The first mayor of Johns Creek was Drury Lovett, who served from 1817 until his death in 1830 CE In 1840 John Coker founded Coker & Son Machine Shop on Commerce Avenue across from today's Centennial Park; this shop became one of the largest machine shops in the country during its time period - producing everything from locomotives to pianos . After years of growth and expansion around City Hall Square, much speculation occurred over which property within City limits should be annexed into Johnson City proper – which ultimately never happened . In 1865 Jno Moses purchased 1/4 interest in Coker & Son Shop from Coker’s widow Mrs Eliza Gamble – giving her control over an entire block contiguous with both sides of Commerce Avenue between Peachtree Street and Ponce de Leon Boulevard southward – making JohnsonCity its official permanent home! This purchase marked the beginning ofJohnsonCity’s rapid growth that has continued ever since! Today continuing growth has led to annexation by other municipalities such as Alpharetta (2000), Decatur (2002), Dunwoody (2004), Jonesboro (2006) Mableton (2008) Oak Cliff(2010)and Reynoldstown (2012). As well as multiple office parks located throughout downtown JohnstonCity including Renaissance Center Park adjacent to government buildings along Ponce De Leon Boulevard
