Johns Creek is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia, about 20 miles north of Atlanta. The population was 8,545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. Johns Creek was founded in 1807 by Major James Hargrave and Thomas Telford as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River between Marietta and Smyrna. The first settler in what is now Johns Creek was John Colquitt, who arrived in 1796 from South Carolina. In 1827, Colonel John Stoneman built a log cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee River near present-day Johns Creek to serve as his winter home and office for trade with Native Americans and travelers on their way to or from Atlanta. The cabin served as a meeting place for local farmers and traders until it burned down in 1831. By 1840, there were three stores operating in Johns Creek: one run by Colonel Stoneman’s wife; one by General Nathan Bedford Forrest; and one by David Wilcoxson (the father of Congressman David Wilcoxson). The town began to grow rapidly during the 1830s when entrepreneurs set up businesses such as sawmills, gristmills, cotton mills, breweries, and tanning works. By 1850, Johns Creek had twenty-four stores and seventy-eight dwellings—all but two of which were frame buildings constructed between 1827 and 1830 using logs brought overland from outside Georgian Bay via land conveyance known as “the Canals” project. One result of this rapid growth was that many residents began to call Johns Creek their home rather than just their work shop or location where they lived while working outside the town limits.. A canal connecting downtown Atlanta with Decatur Street led directly to what is now Piedmont Park through what was then farmland east of downtown Atlanta; this opened up acres of new housing developments within walking distance of each other that continue to exist today (e.g., Westside Village). This early development can be seen most clearly around Church Street corridor running along both sides of Piedmont Park until it meets Peachtree Road – today’s Martin Luther King Jr./Jr.'s Boulevard – beyond which are several blocks containing several historic businesses dating back to before streetcar lines reached here - including J & L Barber Shop (established 1835), Eufaula Cotton Gin (1841), Masonic Temple No 1 (1862), Coca Cola Bottling Company Refinery Building #1 (1910), North Georgia Railroad Depot No 2 (1926) – all destroyed during World War II … Today visitors can explore many examples of typical 19th century architecture such as: Stonehenge type wrought iron fence at Public Square; Queen Anne style brick courthouse south side Of Town Hall complex; Federal Style Schoolhouse at Main Street corner…. Many others have been added since then like Forest Hills Tennis Club located across street from Courthouse Complex…Today Johnstontown consists mostly of single family homes/condos/citieshomes without any commercial activity…..
