The first Europeans to visit the area that is now Johns Creek were Giovanni da Vergata and his crew of 14 in 1551. The English explorer John James Audubon was also exploring this region in 1827 when he noted the large waterfalls and rapids on the Chattahoochee River. These natural attractions soon drew tourists, who would come to enjoy the river's beauty as well as explore its many hiking trails. In 1870, Georgia Legislature authorized a road from Chattanooga to Marietta and plans for a canal connecting the Chattahoochee River and the Tennessee River were developed. However, these projects never materialized because of financial difficulties. In 1892, a group of businessmen bought 6,000 acres of land at what is now Johns Creek for $2 per acre. This location provided them with ample resources for development and allowed them to create a successful business empire that includes several shopping malls, airports, universities, and other businesses today.
