Johns Creek is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Chattahoochee River and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. In 1802 Colonel George Washington took possession of what is now known as Chattahoochee River Station, which he named "Columbia." He envisioned a location where he and his troops could rest and conduct field trials without having to worry about getting lost or attacked by the Cherokee Indians. Unfortunately for Washington, this idea never got off the ground and he abandoned it in 1803. But some believe that this abandoned site may have been what inspired General Andrew Jackson to develop his frontier strategy during the American Civil War. When Confederate General Robert Ewell moved north from Savannah to take over Jackson's army near Athens, Georgia on July 24, 1861 (three days after Atlanta had fallen), Union General Braxton Bragg decided to attack instead based on reports that an large Confederate force was moving downriver towards him concealed within John's Creek. Instead of attacking head-on like he might have done if he knew better, Bragg ordered his men to cross the river at Hartsfield Landing and march upriver towards John's Creek Junction before turning back downstream again at least 400 yards when they reached a fortified position known as White Meadows Cemetery – thus allowing Confederate forces access into central Georgia without having to fight through open countryside). After learning of this plan from Bragg himself later that day, Confederate General Robert Ewell withdrew his army across the river at Lookout Mountain rather than battle against Union forces that were much more numerous and well-trained than his own unit could hope to achieve given its limited supply lines and artillery support. Johns Creek is located in the U.S. state of Georgia, and is a tributary of the Chattahoochee River. The creek has its origins in the 18th century, when it was part of the boundary between North and South Carolina. In 1785, General George Washington's army passed through Johns Creek on their way to Battle of Dumfries Junction, and during this battle, General Nathanael Greene's brigade was destroyed by a cannonball that ricocheted off a rock near the creek's mouth. The creek was named for Captain John Smith (1627-1693), who explored what is now Georgia in 1675. After his exploration, he named two forks of the Chattahoochee River for British commanders: one for Sir James Stirling (1592-1647) and one for Colonel Robert Ewell (1742-1812). During the American Revolution, many British soldiers abandoned their encampments on Georgian land near Johns Creek to join forces with Patriot troops marching along the Ohio River Valley. Because of this rebel activity, General Washington ordered his general quarters atonnepted at Fort Moultrie on Savannah Island in 1794 so that he could better monitor Rebel activity along Georgians' borders. The first permanent settlement in Johns Creek was founded by Scotsman Alexander McGillivray in 1796 as McGillivray’s Colony; it grew rapidly due to its natural resources and trade with other parts of Georgia and Alabama. In 1800, an act became law establishing Atlanta as a city; however, until 1801 Johns Creek remained an unincorporated community overseen by a farmer namedDavid Cobbold because no town had been built within its boundaries since McGillivray’s colony had ceased operations nine years earlier. Cobbold continued to manage relations with surrounding communities until 1821 when he sold his holdings to Scarlett Wilkinson which made Johns Creek an incorporated municipality under her name only – Columbia County still remains much as it did before Scarlett Wilkinson took over management from Cobbold six years later! By 1830, roads connecting nearby settlements had been completed making transportation easier and making goods available throughout both Columbia County and adjacent counties; thus beginning what would become known as “the boomtown era” for Johnston City! Between 1830- 1840 more than 1 million people lived within Johnson City limits!During this time period growth rates slowed but not stopped as new development boomed around town; nevertheless advances were being made such as public water availability which allowed businessesaboard Telegraph Roadto grow into some major enterprises such as woolen millsand cotton ginners while also creating jobs for localsallowing more families accessto educationindoining things like automobiles during this time period! This growth pattern would continue unabated even after Union victory at Appomattox Court Housein 1865 resulting in most Jeffco citizens moving westward into newly formed Montgomery Countyduring Reconstruction; however local businesses such as Coca Cola bottling plantwould continue growing until 1974!! Since then small towns have gradually begun redeveloping their once vibrant downtown cores while larger commercial districts have sprung up around newer subdivisions !!
