In 1865, the area now known as Johns Creek was part of the then-new Georgia Territory. The territory was created from the southcentral portion of Alabama and northwestern Mississippi. The first guns in what is now Johns Creek were brought over by white settlers in 1835. By 1845, there were around thirty gun shops in the area. In 1861, when Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, most of Georgia became Union territory. However, some areas including Johns Creek remained under Confederate control until 1865.
Johns Creek is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. It is located on the east side of the Chattahoochee River. The population was 1,619 at the 2010 census. The town was named for General James Johns who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The first settler in what is now Johns Creek was John Crouch, who built a cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee in 1802. A post office was established here in 1807 and remained in operation until 1865. In 1828, General James Johnston moved his headquarters from Middlebury to this location to command operations against Seminole Indians. The town grew steadily during Johnston's tenure and by 1830 it had a school, Methodist Episcopal church, jail, and four stores. By 1840 it had 9 houses and 100 residents. In 1845, General Robert Ewell decided to move his army across the river to take Fort Pillow from Confederate forces under Nathan Bedford Forrest. He ordered Sergeant John Pritchard to build him an artillery battery at nearby Hawkins Mill which would have far-reaching strategic implications for both Johnston's army and Forrest's fortifications; however, when Pritchard arrived too late (the mill had been destroyed by fire), he only found nine cannonballs instead of forty-eight as he expected.[1] In 1861 before Confederate troops were able to cross over into Alabama they burned down Hawkins Mill so that no one could bring food or ammunition overland with them into Confederate territory[2]. This event helped shorten Atlanta's siege of Petersburg by two weeks[3]. AfterAtlanta fell all Union forces were withdrawn south towards Chattanooga where they surrendered on April 9th 1865[4]. During Reconstruction Johnson signed an Executive Order calling for all black citizens of Georgia subject to military service within three months or face arrest and imprisonment[5], leading many slaves away from their masters back into bondage again (see Jim Crow). During World War II local farmers produced food for both sides throughout most of the war,[6] but after VE Day civilian control reverted back to African Americans as soon as hostilities ended.[7] Today much of what used once been commercial farmland has become residential neighborhoods such as Johns Creek proper while smaller acreage remains undeveloped rural farmsteads surrounding towns like Claytonville and Gainesville along with scattered hamlets dotting rural ridges throughout Fulton County including those near Jekyll Island[8][9]

The community was named for John Randolph Johns, who settled there in 1814. Johns Creek began as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River and grew to become a small town. In 1831, it received its first school and two years later it had its first pastor. In 1835, the town emerged as a center for cotton production and by 1840 it contained 10 stores and 100 residents. By 1865, however, John's Creek had shrunk to just 350 people when the railroads arrived and manufacturing left the community behind. In recent years, Johns Creek has seen growth in its cultural activities includingSeveral music festivals have been held at various locations in Johns Creek over the past few years such as Peach Festivals(2007), Bluegrass & BBQ (2009), Folklife Festival (2010) and CiderFestivals (2013-present). As well as many sporting events including Midsomer Madness golf tournament (2012), soccer tournaments (2008-2011), boys' basketball championships (2004-2005) and girls' volleyball championships (2006-2007).
Johns Creek is located in Fulton County, Georgia. It was formed by the confluence of the Chattahoochee and Oconee Rivers. The creek flows south for about 100 miles before turning west near Decatur and emptying into the Alabama River.
