The creek formed in 1733 when a small stream called Pee Dee emptied into what is now Johns Creek. The first settlers were Quakers who built their Meeting House on land donated by General James Oglethorpe and his family in 1734. In 1802, John Randolph founded Randolph College in nearby Mocksville and named it for himself. In 1806, the United States Congress created what is now Fulton County as a result of the Compromise of 1850 and named it for Roger Sherman Johnston (1765-1848), an alternate name for Robert Lloyd Johnston (1763-1822). Johnston became one of the most powerful men in Georgia politics because he controlled much of the land east of Atlanta and could easily send representatives to Washington D.C.. He also developed friendships with several American presidents including George Washington and James K Polk. When Sherman died childless in 1848, Georgia decided to give him a state funeral instead of leaving him buried at Mount Zion Cemetery like many otherpoliticians before him In 1888, Johns Creek was designated as one of four townships within newly created Fulton County – along with Moultrie, Hawkinsville and Roswell – due to its growth as an agricultural center during Reconstruction period following the Civil War In 1904, Atlantans developed Chattahoochee River Valley oil fields just downstream from Johns Creek which led to increased development around this community Johns Creek experienced rapid growth after World War II until its peak population numbering 10,500 in 1960 but has since declined significantly Today there are only few families living there with most residents commuting to larger cities or suburbs outside of Atlanta
