Johns Creek was founded in 1836 by General Andrew Williamson. The town was named for John Stevens Johnston, an American Revolutionary War general and member of the delegation that negotiated the Treaty of Paris after the war. The first store in Johns Creek opened in 1838 and became one of the largest in America at its time. In 1846, Howell Cobb built a home here that still stands today as one of Atlantas most famous homes. In 1870, Atlanta annexed Johns Creek and many of its residents relocated to become what is now known as Midtown Atlanta. The post office closed here on July 1, 1969; however, it reopened on October 6th as part of an airport expansion project led by Mayor Kasim Reed which included creating two new levels at Peachtree Center mall with new offices and shopspace for businesses on top and below ground level respectively- later renamed John's Creek Gateway Plaza). The original school building which has been preserved as a museum remains standing today across from Midtown Mall (now MARTA stations) between 2nd Street NW and 4th Street NW near downtown Atlanta; it served grades 1-8 until 1966 when it became Georgia Tech's first girls' high school gymnasium (it has also been used for other functions such as concerts and promuations).
