The kits were designed to help keep firearms clean and free of dirt, dust, and other contaminants. In the early days of the kit industry, many companies made their own cleaning kits, but Dave's kit was the first to be widely available.
Johns Creek is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The community began as a post office in 1821 and was named for General John Sumpter, who had commanded American forces during the War of 1812. Gun cleaning kits have been around for many years and are now a common product in most home arsenals. The history of these Kits can be traced back to the early 1800s when Gunsmiths and Riflemen would take their firearms apart to clean them. At that time, there was no way to clean Firearms with just soap and water! So, they needed a kit to help them with this task. The first Gun Cleaning Kits were designed by Mr. John Lanyon in 1802. These kits were called the “Lanyon” kit and consisted of a set of tools including a brush, scraper, funnel, bucket and scrubber. The Brush was used to remove any build-up on the barrels or stock which could cause accuracy problems. The Scraper was used to remove any nicks or dents from the guns barrel or stock. The Bucket was used to pour all of the cleaner onto the gun surface then using the funnel, it was allowed to work its way into every nook and cranny until all of it had been absorbed. The Scrubber was then used to completely clean everything off before putting everything back together again. This Kit cost $14.95 at Mr. Lanyon’s store at that time! In 1907, another company named “John Hogg & Sons” introduced their own Gun Cleaning Kit which consisted of a brush, scraper, funnel, bucket and scrubber combination unit price $39.95 at that time! This Kit featured an improved design over the earlier Lanyon kit which included two brushes on either side of a central shaft (pictured below). It also featured (for the first time) metal dipsticks which helped prevent sticking while cleaning!. This new Kit also included several other features such as an automatic shutoff system preventing you from working too long without stopping(). In addition, this Kit came with instructions booklet which detailed how each tool worked! By 1920, another company named “Elliott Sword & Tool Co., Ltd” had entered intothe market with their own Gun Cleaning Kits priced at $59.95! This company offered several different models including one featuring four brushes on either side of a central shaft (pictured below)! Additionally, this model came complete with instructions booklet listing all of the different parts required for use!. This Model became very popular due its ease of use combined with its low price tag! By 1930-1931 alone, Elliott Sword & Tool Company produced over 1 million kits!!!
